In conjunction, 不過 bat1 gwo3 and 但係 daan6 hai6 both mean “but”.

Both are placed either:

  1. At the beginning of a sentence,
  2. At the beginning of the second clause of a compound sentence (with or without a pause).

但係 daan6 hai6 is sometimes used together with another conjunction, 雖然 seoi1 jin4 which is placed at the head of the first clause.

In such a case, “雖然 seoi1 jin4但係 daan6 hai6” means “although … yet”. 不過 bat1 gwo3 cannot be used together with another conjunction.
